The number, and how it was measured.

A figure on its own tells you very little about a magnetic product. Where was it measured, and with what between the magnet and the skin? Tianling states both.

N pole on every body-facing surface

On all Tianling models the surface that touches the body is the N pole (north-seeking pole). The reason is consistency: if polarity varies between models, the same product behaves differently from one wear to the next.

How to check it at home

  1. Get an ordinary magnetic compass.
  2. Bring the compass close to the body-facing surface of the product.
  3. If the S pole of the needle (usually the uncoloured end, or the end marked "S") is pulled toward the surface, that surface is the N pole.

No special instrument is needed. Publishing how to check is more useful than simply stating "it is N pole", and it is how we think this category should be sold.

Field strength is decided by distance

Measured values first published July 2016. 1 G = 0.1 mT

At the magnet surface (0 cm)1,500 G
Through one layer of fabric250 G
5 cm away10 G
25 cm away1 G
1,500 G at the magnet surface becomes 250 G through one layer of fabric, and 10 G at 5 cm. In short, a Gauss rating is not the figure you experience while wearing it.
ConditionField strengthIn mTNote
At the magnet surface (0 cm)1,500 G150 mTBare skin, or one thin layer between magnet and skin
Through one layer of fabric250 G25 mTUnderwear or a thin base layer — the normal wearing condition
5 cm away10 G1 mTWorn over several layers, or sitting loose on the body
25 cm away1 G0.1 mTOff the body; any effect is negligible at this distance

The practical conclusion: worn over several layers, you are in the lower rows of that table. Even for warmth, the intended wearing position is on bare skin or over one thin layer.

Materials and construction

ItemSpecificationNote
Magnetic materialRare-earth neodymium magnets (NdFeB)Sintered rare-earth magnets: strong in a small volume, but sensitive to heat
Magnet formWide magnetic stripsCovering an area rather than points makes the product tolerant of slight misalignment
Typical field strength1,600–1,800 G at the magnet surfaceVaries by model; check the figure on the product listing
PolarityN pole on every body-facing surfaceConsistent across the range
Magnetic ageingAbout 5% per 100 years, per technical documentationHeat is the one real weakness: direct sun, tumble drying and ironing accelerate loss sharply

We do not use the term "medical grade". There is no legal standard behind that phrase in the EU, the US, the UK or China. It sounds reassuring but cannot be substantiated after purchase. Tianling describes only measurable properties: material, field strength, polarity and construction.
